TSWA selects area standouts to All-State teams


FRIENDSWOOD — The Texas Sports Writers Association selected their 2019 All-State teams and there were several area players who received the coveted honor.

Friendswood, who won the Class 5A Region III crown and advanced to the 5A state volleyball tournament, had three players on the teams.

The Lady Mustangs had two players named to the first-team. They were:

Middle blocker senior Makensy Manbeck who had 474 kills, 127 blocks, 37 aces, 93 digs, and eight assists. Manbeck was also the district co-offensive MVP and will continue her education and playing career at Houston Baptist University.

Outside Hitter junior Ashlyn Svoboda who had 419 kills, 559 digs, 666 receptions, 51 blocks, 27 aces, 54 assists and was the district co-offensive MVP. Svoboda has made a non-binding verbal commitment to continue her education and playing career for Northwestern State University.

Named to the 5A All-State third-team was senior setter Tori Weatherley who had 1,171 assists, 49 kills, 249 digs, 30 blocks, and 33 aces. Weatherley was a two-time district Setter of the Year and has given her commitment to continue her education and playing career to Gardner-Webb University.


Manvel Lady Mavericks

Middle Blocker Morgan Smith was named to the 5A All-State second-team.

Outside Hitter Aryn Johnson was named 5A All-State honorable mention.


Shadow Creek Lady Sharks

Outside Hitter Alexis Williams was named to the 5A All-State third-team.


Pearland Lady Oilers

Middle Blocker April Conant was named to the 6A All-State third-team.

Outside Hitter Jackie Arrington was named 6A All-State honorable mention.
