Lady Oilers open up district action with OT win over Lady Bears
January 9, 2024
As the defending Class 6A Region III champions last season that sent them to the 6A state basketball tournament, Pearland head coach Jere' Adams has her girls ready for another winning season. Currently, the Lady O's have a 14-6 overall record and 1-0 in district.
Pearland dominated the opening half, but struggled in the second half to let the Lady Bears tie up the game at the end of regulation 50-50 to send the contest into an extra period.
The two teams continued in their see-saw battle with the Lady Oilers outscoring Hastings 7-6 to pull out the 57-56 district win.
The opening half saw Pearland take the first quarter 14-8 and the second period 14-9 to post a comfortable 28-17 lead at intermission.
But the Lady Bears came out strong in the third quarter 19-15 to close the gap to 43-36.
"Hastings is always a tough environment. We got into foul trouble early and did not finish in the fourth quarter like we needed to," said head coach Jere' Adams. "In the end we were able to come up with a clutch rebound and finish."
Pearland struggled down the stretch as the Lady Bears continued their pressure to take the final frame 14-7 to force overtime.
Pearland outscored Hastings 7-6 in the four-minute extra period to post the 57-56 district win.
The Lady Oilers were led on offense by junior Eliece Perry and senior La'Niah who both scored a team-high 14 points while freshman A'zyua Blair tossed in 11.
"La'Niah Thornton shot the ball well for us finishing with 14 points and six rebounds," Adams said. "Eliece Perry also finished with 14 points and six rebounds and the game winning bucket."
Pearland is on a five-game win streak as they beat Foster (70-42), Clear Creek (51-40), Clear Falls (48-32), Fort Bend Kempner (49-17), and Alief Hastings (57-56) -- all since the Thanksgiving break.
