Pearland remains perfect in district with wins over Taylor and Hastings

PEARLAND — The Pearland Oilers have the best early season record in recent memory at 20-4 overall and 3-0 in district.

Last week, Pearland head coach Steve Buckelew saw his hard-court warriors take out the Alief Taylor Lions and the Alief Hastings Bears in crucial league games.

The Oilers had to face the Lions at their own home court and survived with a 61-56 victory.

The Lions took the opening quarter 16-15, but the Oilers came back in the second period 14-11 for a 29-27 lead at intermission.

The game was close in the third quarter as the Lions nipped the Oilers 18-16 sending both teams tied 45-45 entering the final eight minutes.

Pearland got a strong effort from their defense holding the Lions to only 11 points while the offense put up 16 points to get the final five-point margin of victory 61-56.

The Oilers were led by senior Javen Hedgeman and Kelyn Adams who both scored 18 points each.

Pearland also hit 19-of-27 from the free throw line.

Pearland 60 - Hastings 35

The clash between Pearland and Hastings wasn't very close as the Oilers used the first and fourth quarters to get a 60-35 district win.

Pearland outscored the Bears 17-6 before Hastings made the game a little closer with the Oilers edging Hasting 15-13 in the second for a 30-21 halftime lead.

The Oilers had to work hard to take the third quarter 10-9, but pulled away 20-5 in the final period as the suffocating Pearland defense put an end to any notion that the Bears would win the game.

Kelyn Adams and Ovidio Perez both scored 11 points each while Colen James added 10 points.
