Pearland routs Pasadena Memorial 82-45

PEARLAND — The Pearland Oilers haven't had an easy time in the first round of district competition, but it looks like they are finally getting the team on the same page as they finish the opening round of league action.

The Oilers found easy prey against the Pasadena Memorial Mavericks 82-45 to move to 4-3 in the league standings with Manvel on the road left on Friday, January 15 at 7:00 p.m. to close out the first round of district.

Pearland will need a strong showing in the second round to make the playoffs so each game is important for the remainder of the season.

The Oilers didn't waste time against the Mavericks as they jumped out to a 23-6 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Senior Michael Guillory led the offensive charge with nine first quarter points including one 3-pointer.

The scoring was a little more balanced in the second quarter as three players scored two baskets apiece which included junior Javen Hedgeman, senior Dovante Carter, and junior Kelyn Adams. Guillory also added another 3-pointer to his scorecard.

Pearland outscored the visitors 42-21 at the intermission and had the game well under control.

The Oilers continued their scoring in the third with 23 points, but some other players picked up the pace as sophomore Ovidio Perez led the charge with 10 points while hitting 2-of-4 free throws.

Freshman Javonne Lowery fired in a pair of long-bomb missiles while Adams added a basket and a trey to spot the Oilers to a 65-36 lead entering the final frame.

Pearland cruised 17-9 in the final stanza for the 82-45 district win.

White hit three baskets and Perez was 2-of-5 from the charity stripe to close out the game.

Adams and Guillory led Pearland with 14-points apiece while Perez tossed in 13 and Carter scored 11 points.

The Oilers will travel to face the Dobie Longhorns on Tuesday, Jan. 19 at 7:00 p.m. They will return home to host the Pasadena Eagles on Friday, Jan. 22 at 7:00 p.m.
