PEARLAND — Pearland basketball coach Steve Buckelew, who is in his 26th year of leading the Oilers, has always believed that offense wins games, but defense wins championships.
Last season, the Oilers began the season 28-0 and most expected them to win the district title until they faltered down the stretch to finish in third place.
This year, Pearland isn't picked as one of the top four teams in the league, yet they are tied at the top with a 4-0 mark with Dawson.
“For the first time in my 26 years here, we’re not picked in the top four in district,” Buckelew said. “No one was expecting us to be where we are right now, but I’m always expecting us to have a group that will compete for the playoffs.
“We’re not a great team, but we’re a good team. When we shoot the ball well, we can be a very good team.”
Pearland currently has a 13-2 season record and 4-0 district mark with league wins over Strake Jesuit (60-52), Alvin (49-25), Alief Elsik (71-50), and Alief Taylor.
Senior Ty Williams currently leads Pearland in scoring with 12.5 points per game while junior Charles Clark is second with 10.7 ppg.
The Oilers will travel to face the Alief Hastings Bears on Wednesday, January 13 at 7:00 p.m. and then will host the Shadow Creek Sharks on Saturday, January 16 at 1:00 p.m.
