PEARLAND — Pearland dropped their game to Clear Brook in overtime and then kept winless Alvin in the league cellar with a lopsided win leaving the Oilers in sole possession of third place in the district standings.
The Oilers and the Wolverines entered their first round confrontation tied for second place at 5-1 while Clear Lake is still undefeated at 7-0 to lead the pack.
After 32 minutes of action, Pearland and Clear Brook finished tied at 58-58 sending the game into an extra period.
Pearland took the first quarter 10-8 and then the Wolverines evened the game at half 23-23.
It looked like the Oilers would have the momentum for the win after outscoring the visitors 17-9 for a 40-32 lead heading into the final frame.
But Clear Brook outhustled and outscored the Oilers 26-18 to knot up the game at the end of regulation.
The momentum shifted and the Wolverines kept it going to get the 70-68 win and sole possession of second place.
Clear Lake, Clear Brook, and Pearland are clearly the front runners as the teams begin the second round of district action this week.
Junior Cameron Reynolds led the scoring for the Oilers with 25 points while Keith Lawson added 13 and Cameron Juniel tossed in 10.
Pearland is now 14-12 overall and 4-2 in district.
Pearland 58 - Alvin 31
Pearland traveled to Alvin to face the last-place Yellowjackets and returned home with a solid 58-31 win to improve their overall mark at 15-12.
Clear Lake finished the opening round at 7-0 while Clear Brook is second at 6-1 while Pearland is in third place at 5-2. The fourth place battle is between Clear Creek and Clear Springs with Brazoswood sitting at an outside chance. Dickinson and Alvin are pretty much out of the running, but could be a spoiler.
The Oilers were a little slow getting started but managed a 10-6 lead over Alvin after the first eight minutes of play.
Pearland scored 11 points in the second period while the defense held the Jackets to only a pair of field goals for a 21-10 advantage at intermission.
The third quarter belonged to Pearland as the Oilers outscored the home team 21-9 for a 42-19 lead entering the final eight minutes.
There wasn't any question in the outcome of this game as Pearland closed out Alvin 16-12 for the 58-31 final.
Keith Lawson led the Oilers in scoring with 17 points while Cameron Reynolds added 11 in the blowout.
Pearland will host league-leading Clear Lake on Friday, January 27 at 7:00 p.m. The Oilers will travel to Dickinson on Tuesday, January 31 at 7:00 p.m.
