Oilers get key win over Sam Rayburn

PEARLAND — The Pearland Oilers entered their game against Sam Rayburn needing a win and some help if they were going to stay in the hunt to make the playoffs this season.

The got the help they needed as Pasadena Dobie and Manvel both lost while the Oilers got a solid 70-40 win over the Texans.

The Longhorns fell to Dawson, 59-47, while Alvin shocked the Mavericks, 77-67 for the first time since Manvel came into existence.

Pearland jumped out to a 24-7 first quarter thanks to the offense by Colen James who fired in a 3-pointer and two baskets for seven points.

The Oilers also got another pair of treys in building the early lead.

The two teams battled back-and-forth in the second period 12-12 leaving the Oilers with a 36-19 advantage at intermission.

The third quarter was even at 12-12 sending Pearland into the final period with a 48-31 lead.

The Oilers closed out the Texans with a 22-9 fourth quarter run for the lopsided 70-40 district win.

James paced the Oilers with 14 points while Javonne Lowery added 13.

Pearland fired in seven 3-pointers while hitting 13-of-23 from the free throw line.

The Oilers need to win out to assure themselves a place in the playoffs. Pearland will host Manvel on Tuesday, Feb. 16 at 7:00 p.m. The post-season will begin on Feb. 22-23.
