Martens, Braswell, Rodgers headline All-District picks


PEARLAND — It came as no surprise that Pearland head coach Lauren Martens would be named District 23-6A "Coach of the Year" after the second-year coach led the Lady Oilers to the district championship with the last title for Pearland coming 26 years ago.

Pearland finished 11-1 in league play to easily claim the crown while also advancing to the playoffs. The Lady O's picked up wins over Clear Falls and Atascocita before falling to 6A Region III finalist and No. 2 state-ranked Clear Springs.

The Lady Oilers finished with a sparkling 27-9 mark.

Pearland sophomore Macey Braswell was named District 23-6A MVP for her outstanding leadership and performance on the court.

Braswell averaged 15.8 points per game hitting 227-of-477 field goals. She was also deadly from 3-point range as she hit 74-of-191. Braswell also grabbed 115 rebounds, dished out 65 assists, and registered 89 steals. She also hit 41-of-61 free throws.

The Lady Oilers had three players named to the All-District first-team.

They included freshman sensation DeYona Gaston who averaged 17.5 ppg, 110-of-168 free throws while leading the team in scoring with 456 total points. Gaston pull down 295 rebounds, passed out 25 assists, 53 steals, and had 78 blocks.

Senior Ravae Payne was selected to the first-team after she averaged 8.6 ppg, while hitting 29-of-108 3-pointers, and 67-of-127 free throws. She also had 155 rebounds, 150 assists, and 111 steals.

Junior Jocelyn Thompson also made the first-team as she averaged 6.6 ppg and hit 35-of-75 free throws. Thompson had 195 rebounds, 45 assists, and 78 steals.

The Lady Oilers also place one player on the All-District second-team and that was senior Julia Gonzales.

The Dawson Eagles were also well represented after they finished in fourth place in the league standing and advanced to the post-season.

Senior Jada Rogers was named the District 23-6A "Defensive Player of the Year."

Rogers averaged 10.2 ppg, was 9-of-29 beyond the arc, and hit 90-of-175 free throws. Rogers had 277 rebounds, passed out 39 assists, and had 81 steals to go with 78 blocks.

Senior Liz Davis was named to the first-team after she averaged 9.2 points per game, was13-of-33 from 3-point land, and made 74-of-148 free throws. She also had 84 rebounds, 36 assists, 78 steals, and six blocks.

Junior Teshuna Lockhart was also selected to the first-team after she averaged 6.1 ppg, while hitting 26-of-52 free throws. She also had 57 rebounds, 52 assists, and 110 steals.
