Lady Oilers blanks Lady Eagles 10-0

PEARLAND — In their first District 22-6A softball showdown, the Pearland Lady Oilers left no doubt as to who was the dominate team with a 10-0 two-hit shutout over the Dawson Lady Eagles.

Junior pitcher Alyssa Denham shut down the Dawson offense by allowing only two hits while the Lady O's banged out 10 hits against losing pitcher Gabrielle Chacon. The game ended with the 10-run mercy rule after five innings.

Pearland is now 8-6 on the season and 3-1 in district while Dawson is 7-8 and falls to 1-3 in league play.

The Lady Oilers used the first three innings to set the stage for a 7-0 advantage.

Senior Sydney Gutierrez put Pearland on the board in the opening frame with a two-run blast over right field to plate Sydney McKay. Lyndsey Stewart had scored earlier making the score 3-0.

Pearland added four more runs in the third thanks to some Dawson errors mixed in with a couple of hits by the Lady Oilers for a 7-0 lead.

Guitierrez, who had four RBIs on the night (2-for-2), laced a single in the fourth frame to score Janna Roberts while Brittany Sockwell stroked a double to plate Gutierrez for a 9-0 lead.

The game ended in the bottom of the fifth when Megan Hiers hit a home run over the centerfield fence to make the score 10-0.

"The girls came out focused and knew what they wanted to do," Pearland head coach Laneigh Clark said. "Sydney (Gutierrez) got that great hit that set the tone for the game.

"We're better when we score early. It lets Alyssa relax a little more and it allows her not to think as much on the mound."

Dawson will need to right the ship soon or they will play themselves out the playoff picture.

"They're good and we're not very good," Dawson head coach David McCorkle said. "We have to find some pitching."
