Oilers remain undefeated in league play
March 21, 2016
PEARLAND — The Pearland Oilers improved their district record to 6-0 before spring break with victories over neighboring Alvin 5-3 and Sam Rayburn 4-1.
Pearland is now 14-2 overall for the 2016 baseball season.
Alvin got on the scoreboard first after both teams were unable to score in the first three frames of action.
The Yellowjackets scored the first run of the game in the top of the fourth inning.
A walk to Caleb Jeter, an errant pickoff attempt, and a passed ball with Nathan Collins at the plate gave Alvin its early 1-0 lead.
The Oilers took the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth when they exploded for five runs and a 5-1 advantage.
Pearland's Parker DeLeon opened up the fifth with a single through the middle of the infield.
After Raymon Garza fouled off a third strike on a bunt, Caleb Maly watched a passed ball move De Leon to second. Maly then laid down a perfect bunt down the third base line to put runners at first and third.
Jacob Whitehead then bunted home De Leon to tie the game at 1-1.
When the ball was mishandled by Alvin catcher Beau Olsovsky, Maly, who tried to advance, was thrown out at third for the second out.
Macord Foran then singled and Cody Williams walked to load the bases.
That brought up Jake Orlando, who watched a wild pitch go to the backstop, allowing Whitehead to cross the plate for a 2-1 Oiler lead.
Orlando then delivered a double to the wall down the right field to drive home two more runs for a 4-1 advantage.
Craig Mattes followed with a shot into the gap in left-center for the fifth run of the inning.
That would be all the runs the Oilers would need though Pearland had to survive the top of the sixth when Alvin scored two runs to cut the margin to 5-3.
Brady Basso picked up the win after allowing only one hit with eight strikeouts though he did walk five in the five innings of work.
“I’m proud of the guys for coming up with the big, two-out hits,” Pearland head coach Anthony Scalise said. “Basso wasn’t great tonight…not as good as he has been, but Alvin swings it pretty good.”
Nick Landrum and Jaron Roblyer closed out the final two innings on the hill to preserve the win.
Maly was 3-for-4 at the plate while Orlando 2-for-3 with two RBIs and one run scored. Whitehead was 1-for-3 with one run scored and one RBI. Cody Williams was 1-for-2 with one run scored.
Pearland 4 - Sam Rayburn 1
Pearland pitcher Izayah Quezada struck out nine and didn't allow a hit over six innings against Sam Rayburn as the Oilers beat the Texans 4-1.
Baily Cummings closed out the game in the seventh to preserve the no-hitter including one strike out.
Pearland to a run in the top of the first, two in the fifth, and one in the seventh while the Texans got an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth for the 4-1 score.
Caleb Maly scored twice while Andrew Flores and Ramon Garza each crossed the plate.
Pearland will host a non-district contest against Westside on Thursday, March 24 at 7:00 p.m. and the Oilers travel to face Manvel on Tuesday, March 29 at 7:00 p.m.
