Lady Oilers get past Pasadena Memorial, Manvel

PEARLAND — Last week was a crucial week in district action for the Pearland Lady Oilers, but they passed with flying colors with wins over Pasadena Memorial and Manvel.

Those two teams, along with Alvin, probably have the best teams in the district to provide any competition in league play and the Lady O's came out with wins to keep them undefeated in district play at 6-0 with Dobie left to complete the opening round.

Pearland knocked off Memorial 5-0 early last week and got some clutch pitching and hitting to complete the shutout.

Alyssa Denham picked up the win after allowing only four hits while striking out eight.

The Lady Oilers struggled at the plate getting only seven hits.

Pearland scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning when Sydney Gutierrez opened up the frame with a walk and later scored on a single by Lindsey Stewart. Rylie Spell reached base on an error allowing Stewart to score for a 2-0 lead.

The Lady Oilers added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth when Stewart singled and scored when Spell launched a home run over the left field wall for a 4-0 advantage.

An insurance run scored for Pearland when Stewart grounded out to shortstop sending Madison Clements, who had walked, home for the final run of the game.

Stewart finished the game going 2-foor-2 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Kristen Cuyos was 2-for-2 while Rylie Spell was 1-for-2 with two RBIs.

Pearland 11 - Manvel 5

It appeared that Pearland and Manvel were going to go in extra innings as both teams matched runs throughout the first six innings of the district showdown at 4-4.

That's when the wheels fell off for Manvel as the Lady Oilers racked up seven runs in the top of the seventh to jump out to an 11-4 lead.

Manvel scored two runs in the first inning before Pearland scored three in the top of the third. Manvel answered with a run in the bottom of the third to knot up the game 3-3.

Pearland took a 4-3 lead in the top of the fifth, but the Lady Mavericks tied up the game 4-4 in the bottom of the sixth.

Two Pearland batters reached base on a walk and single setting up Lindsay Stewart who singled to score a run. Sydney McKay came up with a clutch hit to centerfield scoring two runs making the score 6-4.

The Lady O's loaded the bases and scored a run when Alyssa Denham was hit by a pitch. The Lady Oilers added another run on a fielder's choice by Aileen Garcia. Sydney Gutierrez stepped up and smacked a triple to add two more runs for Pearland making the score 11-4.

Manvel scored harmless run in the bottom of the seventh giving the Lady Oilers the 11-5 district win.

McKay led the way going 3-for-4 including a triple, two runs scored and two RBIs. Kristen Cuyos was 1-for-1 with two RBIs. Walls was 1-for-3 with two runs scored. Stewart was 1-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI.

Denham picked up the win allowing eight hits, five runs, four walks, and nine strikeouts.
