Lady Oilers edge La Porte in opening round

PEARLAND — The Pearland Lady Oilers won their third straight District 22-6A title this year and then they avenged a 1-0 first-round playoff loss last year to the La Porte Lady Bulldogs.

Freshman Dayla Izaguirre turned out to be the player that made the difference as she headed a corner kick with 9:03 left in the second overtime to give Pearland a 1-0 victory over the Lady Bulldogs in a battle between two talented teams.

Izaguirre had two shots in regulation that could have gone in. One shot was snagged by the La Porte goalkeeper and the other shot hit the side post.

Pearland's score came with nine minutes left in the second overtime so the Lady Oilers' defense had to step up their effort to turn back La Porte's offensive effort.

La Porte took control of the game for most of the first half getting five shots on goal, but each time Pearland didn't break.

The Lady Oilers got more aggressive in the second half to gain some momentum in overtime.

"In playoff soccer, you have to find a way to score goals," said Pearland head coach Erik Forrest. "And we found a way. We made a couple of changes right before halftime, and it really kind of caused them some problems in the second half and gave our kids some confidence."

Pearland will play Fort Bend Austin next in the area round.
