Pearland closes out first round of district with a 5-2 mark

PEARLAND — The Pearland Oilers fell to Alvin 4-3 to open up district and then finished the opening round of league play with a 5-2 mark. The only other district loss was to Shadow Creek 4-3 while closing out league play with a 7-6 win over cross-town cousin Dawson and 4-2 over Strake Jesuit.

Shadow Creek 4 - Pearland 3

Shadow Creek scored four runs in the third inning and then held on to preserve a 4-3 win.

The Oilers scored a pair of runs in the top of the fourth to cut the margin to 4-2 in favor of the Sharks.

In the fourth, Cameron Ponce blasted a two-out double and scored on a single to left field by Carter Allen. Conner DeLeon reached base on an error that allowed Allen to cross the plate to narrow the score to 4-2.

Pearland added another run in the top of the sixth when Ponce opened with a triple to center and scores on a one-out sacrifice fly be DeLeon to centerfield cutting the margin to 4-3.

Mark Zapata took the loss for Pearland as he lasted two and a third innings, allowing one hit and two runs.

Ponce went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Pearland at the plate.

Pearland 7 - Dawson 6

Pearland scored two runs in the third, one in the fourth, two in the fifth, and one in the sixth for a 7-0 lead over Dawson heading into the top of the seventh frame.

Dawson scored six runs in the failed comeback on a single by Cole Sebok, a walk by Zachery Mack, a walk by Hayden Curry, a single by Cayden Adamson, and a single by Hayden Windsor.

The Eagles tallied six runs in the seventh inning as Sebok, Mack, Curry, Adamson, and Windsor powered the big inning with RBIs.

Pearland scored three runs in the fifth inning. The offensive firepower was led by Caden Ferraro and Seth Davis, who each had RBIs in the inning.

Garrett Coiner was the winning pitcher as he lasted six innings, allowing four hits and no runs while striking out ten. Ferraro and Jake Mader-Cooper entered the game out of the bullpen and helped to close out the game in relief. Ferraro recorded the last two outs to earn the save.

Pearland racked up seven hits with Carter Allen and Cameron Ponce each collecting multiple hits. Allen went 3-for-4 at the plate. Ferraro had a roundtripper in the fifth.

Pearland 4 - Strake Jesuit 2

Strake Jesuit scored one run in the second and third innings for an early 2-0 lead and then the Oilers answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third to tie the game at 2-2.

That's the way the game stayed until Pearland score two more in the bottom of the sixth to pull out the 4-2 District 23-6A win.

Mark Zapata took the win for Pearland as he went six and a third innings, allowing two runs on five hits and striking out eight. Jake Mader-Cooper threw two-thirds of an inning in relief out of the bullpen. and recorded the last two outs to earn the save.

Caden Ferraro, Robert Patrick, Cain Landry, and Carter Allen each collected one hit to lead the Pearland offense.
