Crain tosses no-hitter for No. 1 state-ranked Pearland

PEARLAND — The Pearland Oilers improved to 22-1 last week and were announced as the No. 1 team in Texas among Class 5A schools.

Southlake Carroll has been at the top spot for most of the season, but they fell in district moving the Oilers from No. 2 to No. 1.

Pearland continues to be undefeated in District 22-5A after getting two dominating wins last week over Pasadena Memorial by the score of 8-1 and Manvel by the score 11-0 in five innings.

Senior Jake Crain thrilled the Pearland crowd at home by pitching a no-hitter over Memorial to get the victory. While Crain silenced the Memorial bats, the Oilers gave Crain all the support he needed with eight runs on nine hits.

Jacob Barfield also got on the fan meter as he hit a solo home run in the bottom of the second for a 1-0 Pearland lead. As it would turn out, that is all the run support that Crain would have needed, but he gladly welcomed the additional runs while cruising on the mound.

The Oilers added two more runs in the bottom of the third and then added four more in the fifth as Connor Wong smashed a solo roundtripper while Kamren Dukes and Ryan Diaz both singled in runs. Skylar Valentine pushed across one more run with a single for a 7-0 lead.

Valentine scored the final run of the game on a single by Seth Mikeska.

Memorial scored an unearned run in the top of the fifth on an error. Otherwise, Crain would have finished with the shutout as well.

The only way that Memorial was able to put runners on base was via walk or error. Crain allowed no hits, walked five, and struck out eight on a memorable pitching performance for the 8-1 victory.

Diaz was 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Barfield was 1-for-2 with a home run for a run scored and an RBI. Mikeska had one hit and an RBI. Wong was 1-for-3 with a home run for a run scored and RBI. Dukes was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Nathan Carter was 1-for-1 with a run scored. Hayden Cole was 1-for-3 with a run scored. Valentine was 1-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI.

Pearland 11 - Manvel 0

This game was never in doubt as Pearland pounded out 10 hits that produced 11 runs against the Manvel Mavericks who were able to get only one hit in the game. The 10-run mercy rule went into effect after five innings as the Oilers shutout the Mavs 11-0.

While the Oilers were ripping Shane Jackson on the mound, senior pitcher Stephen McBroom was silencing the Manvel bats.

McBroom got the win after allowing one hit, no runs, one walk while striking out two in four innings of work. Brady Basso pitched the final frame and shutout the Mavs offense.

Pearland scored a pair of runs in the top of the first and third innings for a 4-0 advantage. Add five more runs in the top of the fourth for a 9-0 lead and two more in the top of the fifth to close out the game 11-0.

Barfield was the leading hitter for the Oilers going 3-for-4 with one run scored and three RBIs including a double. Connor Wong was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBIs including a two-run blast over the fence. Hayden Cole was 1-for-1 with a pair of RBIs. Skyler Valentine was 1-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Jacob Almendarez scored three times and had one RBI.
