PEARLAND — The Pearland Lady Oilers continued their dominating play in District 22-5A picking up wins over Sam Rayburn and La Porte last week.
Junior pitcher Brooke DuBois pitched a five-hit shutout against the Sam Rayburn Lady Trojans (5-15, 2-7) as the Lady Oilers won 9-0.
Junior Jessica Bowden led the offense with a triple while Megan Coronado added a double to lead the Pearland nine-hit offensive attack.
After Pearland scored a pair of runs in the top of the first and third innings, the Lady O's broke the game open with four runs in the top of the fifth for an 8-0 lead. Pearland added one more in the top of the seventh for good measure.
Pearland improves to 19-5-1 overall and 9-0 in league play.
Pearland 7 - La Porte 1
The La Porte Lady Bulldogs came to Pearland looking to stay in the hunt for a playoff spot, but returned home in fifth place and two games back of fourth-place Pasadena Memorial.
The league-leading Lady Oilers improved their season record to 20-5-1 and their league-leading 10-0 record. The defending Class 5A Region III champions also nailed down their place in the post-season with the win. Trailing the Lady Oilers in the district race is second-place Deer Park and third-place Dobie who all have a comfortable lead over La Porte, Sam Rayburn, South Houston, and Pasadena.
Junior righthander Jessica Bowden took the pitching circle for the Lady Oilers and limited the Lady Bulldogs to only four hits while striking out seven.
Pearland scored two runs in the bottom of the first and three more runs in the bottom of the second for a comfortable 5-0 cushion at the start of the game.
After La Porte managed one run in the top of the fifth to cut the lead to 5-1, Pearland added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings to post the 7-1 victory.
The Lady O's smashed out 13 hits and took advantage of six errors by La Porte.
Pearland hosted Pasadena Memorial on Tuesday (late) and then will travel to South Houston on Friday, April 16 at 6:30 p.m. Deer Park will come to Pearland on Tuesday, April 20 at 7:00 p.m. and then the Lady Oilers will travel to face Dobie on Friday, April 23 at 6:30 p.m. in the season finale before the playoffs.
