Pearland maintains top spot in district with win over Dawson

PEARLAND — The Pearland Oilers remained atop the District 23-6A standings after getting a 7-2 win over cross-town cousin Dawson.

The Oilers improved their league record to 9-0 which gives them a two-game lead over Strake Jesuit (7-2) and George Ranch (7-2) who are tied for second-place. Dawson is 6-4 followed by Brazoswood (4-6), Alief Taylor (2-7), Alief Hastings (2-7), and Alief Elsik (0-9).

The Oilers have already made their reservation for the playoffs while Dawson is very much in the playoff hunt.

Matt Adams led the charge for Pearland, both on the hill and in the batter's box. Adams was 2-for-3 at the plate that included a two-run homer and a two-run double. He pitched 6 2/3 innings while giving up only one run (unearned) on one hit with four strikeouts to pick up the win.

Pearland took a 1-0 lead in the first after a one-out double from Shawn Huber. One batter later, Mason Lytle’s grounder to shortstop was misplayed, allowing Pearland to take the early advantage.

The Oilers then scored four runs in the third inning, sending 10 men to the plate.

After loading the bases on a walk and two hit batsmen, Cole Smajstrla reached on an infield single for a 2-0 score. The ensuing throw to first resulted in an error, allowing the Oilers to stretch the lead to 3-0.

Adam Vackar drew a two-out walk to load the bases for Adams, who smashed a double to left-center, producing a 5-0 lead.

Dawson finally scored in the fifth inning on a pair of two-out walks to Tristan Schwehr and Carter Ostrom before Jacob Carriere’s grounder to third resulted in an errant throw for a 5-1 score.

However, in the bottom half of the inning, Pearland’s Carter Allen reached first on a strikeout and wild pitch, Vackar bunted him to second, and Adams blasted his shot over the left-centerfield wall for a 7-1 score.

Dawson scored an unearned run in the seventh, but Lytle closed out the game on the mound for the 7-2 district win.
