Lady Oilers edge George Ranch in extra innings
April 18, 2017
PEARLAND — As expected, the game between Pearland and George Ranch was expected to be a battle, but no one thought it would go on for 13 innings before the outcome would be decided.
It turned out that the 13th inning was lucky for the Lady Oilers as Janna Roberts led off with a single past the shortstop, but George Ranch got the next two Pearland hitters to strike out and pop out leaving Roberts still at first base.
With two outs, Pearland shortstop Ashlynn Walls stepped up to the plate and drove an 0-1 pitch over the right field wall for a two-run homer giving the Lady O's a 4-2 lead.
The Lady Longhorns got the third out and went into the 13th inning needing at least a pair of runs to keep the game going.
Pearland pitcher Adrianna Chavarria walked the first Ranch hitter. The next hitter sacrificed the runner to second. The next batter walked putting runner on first and second with one out. Chavarria kept her composure and got the next two batters to fly out to left and ground out to third to seal the 4-2 district victory.
The Lady Oilers scored first in the top of the second when Lauren Ochoa hit a one-out single, advances to third on an error, and scores on a ground out by Ryleigh Love for a 1-0 lead.
Ranch takes a 2-1 lead in their half of the second, but Pearland tied it up in the third when Kylee Buck stroked a 2-2 pitch to right field. Walls stroked a single to left moving Buck to third, but a George Ranch error on the play scores Buck to tie up the game 2-2.
Then the marathon of scoreless innings followed until the Lady Oilers were able to get the clutch home run by Walls to get the crucial district win giving them a 9-2 league record and one-game back of league-leading Brazoswood.
The victory assured Pearland of finishing no worse than second place, and the Lady Oilers will have a chance to tie Brazoswood for the league title in the final regular season game with the Lady Bucs.
Chavarria pitched all 13 innings, striking out 11 while allowing just four hits.
Buck, Roberts, and Walls each had two hits for the Lady Oilers with Walls driving in two runs. George Ranch pitcher Lexi Tover also worked 13 innings, allowing eight hits while striking out seven.
