PEARLAND — The Pearland Lady Oilers (25-5-1, 11-0) have secured their place in the post-season and at least a share of the District 22-5A crown. With only two games remaining, the Lady O's can win the title outright with a victory over Deer Park (21-9, 9-2), who they played on Tuesday night (late). No. 3 area-ranked Pearland is the defending Class 5A Region III champions and head coach Laneigh Clark and her girls will be working hard to make another trip to the state softball tournament this year. The Lady Oilers lost to Smithson-Valley 1-0 in the state title game last year.
One of the tougher teams in 22-5A came to Pearland last Friday in the form of the Pasadena Memorial Lady Mavericks. The game became a pitcher duel with Pearland's Jessica Bowden against Shannon Miliman.
Bowden allowed only five hits while striking out nine and issuing no walks. Miliman limited the Lady Oilers to only four hits while whiffing seven and walking three.
The only run scored in the game came in the bottom of the fourth when Lauren Langner beat out an infield single, moved to second on a walk by Brooke DuBois. After Langner and DuBois advanced on stolen bases, Jaclyn Bechtle walked to load the bases. That set up a long sacrifice fly to centerfield plating Langner for a 1-0 lead.
The only scoring threat for Memorial came in the top of the third with Sydney Aguilar opened with a double, but was stranded as Bowden retired the next three batters. That began a string of 15 straight batters for Bowden as the Lady Mavericks never had another baserunner over the final four innings.
Pearland's bats were especially quiet against the Memorial lefthander as Megan Coronado, Langner, Stacie Pilkington, and Bowden were the only ones to forge a hit in the game.
Pearland, Deer Park, and Dobie have secured their place in the playoffs while Pasadena Memorial (6-6) and La Porte (5-7) are only a game apart with two left to play. Memorial has the tougher schedule as they still have to face Deer Park. A loss would leave Memorial and La Porte tied for fourth place. La Porte beat Memorial both times during the regular district schedule.
Pearland 17 - South Houston 2
The game against South Houston was almost over before it began as the Lady Oilers thrashed the Lady Trojans 17-2 as Brooke DuBious earned the win on the mound with six strikeouts. Katie Blanar also saw time in the pitching circle
The game was highlighted by an 11-run third inning that saw 11 straight Lady Oilers score. Every player on the roster entered the game in some capacity in a total team effort in the rout.
Megan Marcet went 1-for-2 at the plate with a double. Jaclyn Bechtle went 2-for-3 with a double and 2 RBIs. Jessica Bowden went 1-for-2 with 2 RBIs. Leandra Maly was a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs scored.
Pearland will close out the regular season prior to the playoffs on Friday, April 23 at Dobie at 6:30 p.m.
