Lady Oilers capture 22-6A crown; playoffs next

PEARLAND — The Pearland Lady Oilers closed out the 2015 softball campaign with a 4-0 win over Pasadena Memorial and a 7-6 win over Manvel to capture the District 22-6A crown to end the regular season. Now it is time for the playoffs.

Pearland will host the Channelview Lady Falcons on Thursday, April 30 at 7:00 p.m. in a one-game playoff showdown. The winner will move on to the area round of the post-season.

Pearland junior pitcher Alyssa Denham had an impressive outing against Memorial as she allowed only two hits, no earned runs with one walk while striking out six over five innings.

Senior Taylor Holtkamp pitched the final two frames, walked one, struck out two and didn't allow any runs to pick up the save.

Pearland scored a run in the bottom of the first when Kaylee Hoppens got a one-out single to left field that sent Kaylee Buck, who had doubled, across the plate.

The Lady Oilers padded their lead with three more runs in the bottom of the fifth as Lindsey Stewart, Buck and courtesy runner Lauren Shepherd all scored in the inning to make the score 4-0 which turned out to be the final.

Top hitters for Pearland included Ashlynn Walls (2-for-2), Buck (1-for-3, 2 runs scored), and Hoppens (1-for-2, 2 RBIs).

Pearland 7 - Manvel 6

The first time these two teams played, the game only last three innings as the Lady Oilers thrashed the Lady Mavericks 16-0. The game ended with the mercy-rule in effect.

However, the second time around was much closer as the Lady Mavs made it a much closer game.

Pearland took control of the contest for the first six innings scoring two runs in the first, three in the third, one in the fourth, and one in the top of the seventh for a 7-1 lead.

The Lady Mavs weren't going to go down that easy as they scored five runs in the final frame to make the score 7-6 before the Lady Oilers were able to put out the fire.

Manvel's comeback effort saw Pearland give up two walks and five singles that allowed the five runs before the Lady Oilers claimed the 7-6 victory.

Alyssa Denham got the win for Pearland as she gave up five hit, three runs, three walks, and recorded eight strikeouts.

Madeline Myers last only 1/3 of an inning in the seventh as she gave up two hits, three runs, one walk before Denham had to step back in to shut down the Lady Mavs.

Kaylee Hoppens was 2-for-4 with one run scored and two RBIs. Sydney McKay was 2-for-4 with one RBI Ashlynn Walls was 1-for-3 with one run scored and courtesy runner Lauren Shepherd scored a pair of runs.
