Lady Oilers sweep Sterling to move on in playoffs

PEARLAND — There was no mystery as to the outcome of the best-of-three series between Pearland and Baytown Sterling. Pearland run-ruled the Lady Ranger 11-1 in the first game and then won the second game with a dominating 10-2 performance.

The Lady O's took care of business in the first game with ease as sophomore pitcher Alyssa Denham allowed on unearned run while limiting the Lady Rangers to only two hits while walking two and striking out 11.

Meanwhile, the offense took control of the game slamming 13 hits for 11 runs. Pearland was led by Kristen Cuyos who went 3-for-4 at the plate while scoring two times and knocking in four RBIs.

Cuyos stepped up in the top of the third and slammed 1-0 pitch over the left field wall to also plate Rylie Spell who reached base on a one-out single making the score 4-1. Gutierrez followed with a single and and scored on a single by Denham for a 5-1 lead.

Spell and Cuyos scored the games first two runs when Madeline Myers punched a two-run single in the first frame.

Pearland score a run in the top of the fourth and then broke the game open with five more runs in the top of the fifth for an 11-1 lead. The inning was highlighted by a two-run double by Cuyos.

Sterling couldn't answer in the bottom of the fifth and the mercy-rule was called with ten-run lead after five innings.

Lindsey Stewart was 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Sydney McKay was 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Spell was 2-for-2 with two runs scored and one RBI. Myers was 1-for-2 with one run scored and two RBIs.


Pearland 10 - Baytown Sterling 2

The Lady O's continued their dominating ways over the Lady Rangers with a 10-2 win that eliminated Sterling from the playoffs.

Rylie Spell banged out her 10th home run of the season that produced three runs in the top of the third. Pearland scored another run in the same frame for a 4-0 lead.

Pearland added three more runs in the top of the fourth and two more in the fifth frame for a commanding 9-1 lead. The final run came in the top of the seventh while Sterling score a second run in the bottom of the sixth.

Alyssa Denham got the win in the pitching circle allowing two runs on four hits with one walk and 10 strikeouts giving her a two-game total of 21 strikeouts.

Lindsey Stewart was 2-for-4 with one run scored. Sydney McKay was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Spell was 1-for-4 with one run scored and three RBIs. Kristen Cuyos was 2-for-3 with one run scored and one RBI. Madeline Myers was 1-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI. Ashlynn Walls was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

Pearland will face Fort Bend Clements in the area round in a best-of-three series. The two teams collide on Thursday, May 1 at 7:00 p.m. Game 2 will be on Friday, May 2 at 7:00 p.m. and game 3 (if necessary) will be on Saturday, May 3 at 7:00 p.m. All games will be played at Alvin HS.
