Lady Oilers sweep Lady Chargers to advance in playoffs

PEARLAND — Pearland swept Clear Springs in a best-of-three series of the opening round of the 6A Region III playoffs by the scores of 4-1 and 4-2 to eliminate the Lady Chargers from the post-season.

The Lady Oilers were the No. 3 seed from District 23-6A while Clear Springs entered the playoffs as the No. 2 seed from District 24-6A. Pearland finished behind No. 1 seed and district champion Dawson and No. 2 seed Brazoswood.

Junior pitcher Alyssa Fort got the win in the first game as she pitched five innings, allowing zero runs on one hit and striking out four. Natalie Trujillo started the game for the Lady Oilers and surrendered one run on two hits over two innings, striking out two before head coach Laneigh Clark called on Fort to take over the pitching duties.

Clear Springs struck first with a run in the top of the first, but Pearland tied up the game 1-1 in their half of the frame.

The Lady Oilers took the lead for good in the bottom of the third with a pair of runs and then added an insurance run in the fifth to post the 4-1 final score.

Janna Roberts led the offensive attack going 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Kaylee Buck was 1-for-2 with a run scored. Ashlin Moreno was 1-for-3 with a run scoring double.

Pearland 4 - Clear Springs 2

Lady Oiler catcher Lauren Ochoa lead the offensive attack for the Lady Oilers as she drove in two runs in helping Pearland (21-14) build an early 3-0 lead before Pearland hung on for a 4-2 victory at Clear Springs.

The Lady Oilers took a 1-0 lead in the first when Kaylee Buck singled, stole two bases and came home on a throwing error.

Pearland scored again in the third inning when Ashlin Moreno singled and scored on an error in a rundown for a 2-0 lead. Ochoa, who had reached on a single, eventually scored on a fielder's choice to make it 3-0.

The Lady Chargers cut the lead to 3-2 in the fifth when Malorie Langford delivered an RBI-single and Hannah Crawford followed with a sacrifice fly.

Pearland closed out its scoring in the seventh inning when Buck reached on an error, went to second on a groundout, then advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on Ochoa's second single.

Natalie Trujillo pitched 4 1/3 innings for Pearland and struck out two to pick up the win while Alyssa Fort pitched 2 2/3 innings and also fanned two to get the save.

Other key hitter for the Lady O's was Kaylee Buck who was 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

Pearland will now face Atascocita in the 6A Region III area round after they beat Pasadena Memorial in the best-of-three series. Atascocita fell to the Lady Mavericks 3-2 in an upset, but swept the next two games 6-3 and 13-1 to advance to face the Lady Oilers.

Pearland and Atascocita will square off with all games at La Porte High School. Game 1 will be on Thursday, May 3 at 7:00 p.m. Game 2 will be on Friday, May 4 at 6:00 p.m. Game 3 (if needed) will be 30 minutes after Game 2.
