Clark wins No. 500, Lady Oilers rout North Shore 11-0

PEARLAND — The 11-0 rout over the North Shore Lady Mustangs proved to be more than just a first-round playoff victory for Pearland head coach Laneigh Clark.

It marked a monumental win for the veteran coach giving her win No. 500 since taking over the program in 1998. Clark now has a 500-156-1 record as the winningest coach in Pearland High School softball history.

She achieved an even more monumental mark on April 1 when the Lady Oilers beat the Pasadena Lady Eagles 15-0. That improved her overall career record with No. 600. She is now 607-493-5 overall.

Clark has taken the Lady Oilers to the Class 5A state softball tournament three times (2009, 2010, 2011) and Pearland brought home the state title in 2010.

With 11 runs in the first three innings, Pearland left no doubt about the eventual outcome.

An RBI single by Kaylee Hoppens, a groundout by Madison Clements, and an RBI double by Kaylee Buck in the second inning gave the Lady O's an early 3-0 lead.

But the big inning took place in the top of the third frame when Pearland erupted for eight runs to build an 11-0 lead.

Clements drove in three runs while leadoff hitter Kaylee Buck had three hits. Lindsey Stewart and Sydney Gutierrez each had two. Stewart also contributed an RBI.

Alyssa Denham knocked in two runs in the third inning to help her own cause in the pitching circle. Denham struck out four in three innings to pick up the win while Adrianna Chavarria fanned five in two innings.

Denham started the inning with a single, scoring Gutierrez and Stewart. That was followed up by Clements' single, plating Janna Roberts and Lauren Shepherd.

Pearland also took advantage of five North Shore errors. Denham and Chavarria limited North Shore to just three hits.

The Lady Oilers advance to the area round and will travel to face Clear Springs on Friday, May 6 at 7:00 p.m. in a best-of-three series. Game two will be on Saturday, May 7, at 5:30 p.m. at Pearland and a third game (if necessary) will follow thirty minutes later.
