No. 2 ranked Lady Oilers dismantle Atascocita in area round

Last season, the Atascocita Lady Eagles defeated the Pearland Lady Oilers 2-1 in a best-of-three series so this year, as both teams advanced to the 6A Region III Div I area round for a repeat confrontation -- the Lady Oilers were fully prepared to avenge being eliminated last year.

Pearland blanked Atascocita 8-0 in Game One but came up short in Game Two 14-6 setting up Game Three to decide who advances to the Region III Div I semifinals.

The Lady O's opened up the top of first inning by scoring six runs and then ads three more runs in the second inning to build a 9-1 lead after only two frames.

Pearland was held scoreless in the third but scored a run in the fourth and then Olivia Matejka drilled a 3-run homer over the right field fence to bump the score to 16-2 in the fifth frame.

The game ended after the bottom of the fifth thanks to the 10-run mercy rule when Atascocita could manage only one run to post the 16-3 final score that ended the season for the Lady Eagles.

Highlights of the first inning included Payton Shugart singled, scoring one run, Payton Powell singled, scoring one run, Dre Smith doubled, scoring two runs, and Mallory Leveille singled, scoring two runs for the 6-0 lead.

The Lady Oilers extended their early lead with three runs in the top of the second thanks to RBI singles by Dre Smith and Elaina Njus.

Madelyn Guzman earned the win for the Lady Oilers. The starter allowed four hits and three runs (two earned) over five innings, striking out four and walking none.

Leading hitters for Pearland included A Lopez (1-for-3, 2 runs,), Layla Bennett (1-for-4, 2 runs, 1 RBI), Payton Shugart (4-for-4, 2 RBIs, 2B), Dre Smith (2-for-4, 2 run, 3 RBIs, 2B), Olivia Matejka (1-for-1, 3 runs, 3RBIs, HR), M Leveille (2-for-2, 1 run, 1 RBI).

Guzman shut down Atascocita in Game One throwing a complete game shutout and leading Pearland to an 8-0 victory. The righthander allowed no runs on five hits while striking out 11 and walking only two.

Olivia Matejka also homered in Game One giving her a round tripper in all three playoff games.

Pearland (32-5) advances to the 6A Region III Div I semifinals where they will face the Cypress Ridge Lady Rams (18-10) in a best-of-three series. Here is the schedule:
