Oilers sweep Summer Creek to advance to region semifinals

TWO RUN DOUBLE

Pearland senior designated hitter Logan Johnson smashes a two-run double vs Summer Creek.

Johnson finished the game with two hits and two RBI's in a 5-0 win for the Oilers that sealed the sweep over the Bulldogs to make Pearland the area round champions for the third straight year.

Pearland has won the 6A Region III title the past two years and are looking to make it three in a row after sweeping the Summer Creek Bulldogs 7-0 and 5-0.

The Oilers have not allowed a run in the playoffs as they have outscored Fort Bend Travis (4-0, 9-0) and Summer Creek (7-0, 5-0) by a total of 25-0.

Next up will be the Lamar Texans facing the Oilers in a best-of-three series beginning on Thursday, May 15 at 7:00 p.m. Game 2 will be Friday, May 16 at 7:00 p.m. and Game 3 (if necessary) will be on Saturday, May 17 at 5:00 p.m. All games will be at Channelview High School.

The Oilers got on the scoreboard on the third pitch of the game when senior shortstop Nico Partida blasted a solo homer over the left field wall to give Pearland a quick 1-0 lead.

The one-run margin held up over the next three inning until the Oilers added two more run in the top of the fifth frame to make the score 3-0.

Ashton Arredondo opened up the inning with a single followed by a sacrifice bunt and a strikeout leaving Arredondo on second with two outs.

Cade Adams reached base on a walk putting pinch runners Pickett and Braxton Jones on second and third with two outs.

Jordan Hernandez stepped up to the plate and delivered a clutch single to centerfield sending Picket and Jones across the pay station for a 3-0 Pearland lead.

The Oilers added three more runs in the fifth inning to increase the margin to 6-0 and an insurance run in the sixth thanks to a run-scoring double by Hayden Mireles to post the 7-0 final score.

PERFECT BUNT

Pearland junior second baseman Aidan Avalos sprints to first after laying down a perfect bunt for an infield single on vs Summer Creek. The soft touch of Avalos allowed runner Walker Hurst to score from third base for an RBI.

Avalos finished with two hits and one RBI and played excellent defense on second base in a 5-0 win and series sweep for Pearland.

Pearland 5 - Summer Creek 0

All-State senior pitcher Nico Partida took the mound in Game 2, scattered five hits in 6 2/3 innings, struck out seven, walked two, and allowed no runs to lead the Oilers to a 5-0 shutout over Summer Creek to sweep them out of the playoffs.

Pearland scored all of their runs is the fifth frame after both teams came up empty in the first four innings.

Senior Jordan Hernandez hit a one-out single to get the offense going in the fifth inning.

Walker Hurst was hit by a pitch putting runners on first and second with one out.

Nico Partida stroked a single to centerfield to score pinch runner Pickett, who was running for Hernandez while Walker moved to third giving the Oilers a 1-0 lead.

Aiden Avalos followed with a single to plate Walker while Partida moved to third making the score 2-0. Pinch runner Grant Shepherd entered the game for Avalos.

Ashton Arredondo kept the offense going with a single to right field to send Partida across the plate whole Shepherd moved to third making the score 3-0.

The Bulldogs would finally shut the Oilers down with a ground out and a pop up for the third out.

Partida and Brady Brewer would blank the Bulldogs the rest of the way to send Pearland to the Class 6A Region III Div I semifinals vs the Lamar Texans.

Leading hitters for Pearland were Partida (2-for-4, 1 run, 1 RBI), Avalos (2-for-4, 1 RBI), Arrendondo (3-for-3, 1 run, 1 RBI), Johnson (1-for-2, 2 RBIs), and Hurst (2-for-2, 1 run).
