PEARLAND — Pearland High School varsity assistant baseball coach Anthony Scalise has been named as the new head coach for the Pearland Oilers baseball team. Scalise will take over the reigns from former head coach Ben Pardo who accepted the job as Pearland ISD athletic director at the start of 2010.
Because of the lateness of Pardo's selection as AD, the 20-year veteran coach wanted to finish out 2010 with his baseball players after seeing them win the 5A Region III title in 2009 and advancing to the 5A state semifinals. The 2010 PHS gave Pardo the District 22-5A title as a going away present. The 2009 squad won the 5A Region III championship and advanced to the state baseball tournament where they lost a hard fought 4-2 contest in extra innings against Lufkin in the state semifinals.
Scalise has served as Pardo's top assistant for the past two years.
The Houston native graduated with a B.S. degree in Sports Administration from the University of Houston with a minor in Health. He served as a graduate assistant at UH and was also an assistant at Pasadena Memorial HS.
Scalise has been coaching for six years. He teaches Special Education at Pearland HS.
He is married to wife, Lanae, who is a registered nurse.
Fishing and hunting are at the top of his list of hobbies.
"We have a lot of good players returning for next year to give coach Scalise a strong foundation to begin his head coaching debut," Pardo said. "I believe he is going to do a great job for us."
