Area teams compete at State 7-on-7 Tournament

PEARLAND — The Manvel Mavericks and Pearland Oilers all qualified and participated at the 2017 state 7-on-7 tournament in College Station.

Both teams advanced to the championship bracket after pool play to compete for the 7-on-7 state championship.

Manvel went undefeated in their four-team pool play getting wins over San Antonio O'Connor (40-39), Hutto (35-32), and Arlington Lamar (53-28).

The Mavericks faced College Station in the opening round and fell 27-21.The loss ended the Mavericks tournament appearance.

Pearland had a rough road through pool play as they opened up with a 28-19 loss to Longview, lost the second game to Desoto 33-24, but picked up a win over Lubbock Coronado 38-36.

Despite the 1-2 in pool play, the Oilers got the No. 2 seed to advance to the championship bracket.

The Oilers face Lake Travis in the opening game and fell 48-38 to end their hopes of a state championship.

Lake Travis took the win and ended up winning the 2017 Division I state 7-on-7 title.
