PEARLAND — The Dawson Eagles and the Pearland Oilers both finished second in pool play to advance to the 7-on-7 state championship bracket, but neither made a serious threat to the finals.
Dawson won the Manvel State Qualifying Tournament while Manvel placed second so both teams advanced to the state 7-on-7 tournament.
Pearland finished second at the Sam Brown SQT to also advance to the state tournament.
Manvel had a good showing as they won their pool play and advanced to the state finals where they fell to Austin Westlake 42-34 in double overtime.
Dawson fashioned a 2-1 record in pool play with wins over Lufkin (21-20) and United (33-26) while falling to Waxahachie (26-18).
Pearland also finished 2-1 in their pool play with wins over Lake Dallas (39-21) and Plainview (21-13) while barely dropping a game to Port Neches (34-33).
In the championship bracket, Dawson faced Austin Lake Travis and came up short 28-25 to be eliminated. Lake Travis eventually advanced to the state semifinals before being eliminated by cross-town rival Austin Westlake 33-32.
The Oilers did win their first round contest with a 32-26 victory over Coppell, but fell to All Saints 44-27 in the second round to end their bid for the 7-on-7 championship.
