Slow starting Oilers beat Alvin 34-10

PEARLAND — It has been a long time since Alvin entered a game with only one loss. The Yellowjackets were 4-1 entering their game against the No. 8 state-ranked and undefeated Pearland Oilers.

It appears that the Jackets have a strong chance to grab the fourth place slot in the District 24-6A standings, but they still have to get by a few good teams including Manvel and Dobie.

After playing such an emotional game the previous week with Dawson, it was obvious that the Oilers were suffering from a hangover of the 28-27 overtime victory.

When people around the Houston area were inquiring about the halftime score with Alvin, many were shocked that it was only 6-3.

That's right. Pearland scored only two field goals by Cody Bernstein. One in the first quarter and the other in the second for a 6-0 lead with the second coming on a 37-yarder with 5:03 left in the first half.

Alvin had one final drive in the second quarter get to the Pearland 22, but had to settle for a 39-yard field goal by Omar Lopez with 2:05 left before intermission.

Most of the first half was watching Pearland implode with mistakes.

Alvin fumbled the ball on their first possession at their own 38 that was recovered by Emylle Jones.

Pearland got the ball to the Alvin 11 before the center snapped the ball over QB Connor Blumrick's head 20 yards. Facing fourth and 30, the Oilers settled for Berstein's first three-pointer.

People on social media was asking is Pearland not playing that well or is Alvin really that good?

In all fairness, that answer was yes to the Oilers' lack of focus and Alvin playing with a lot of heart.

No one knows what Pearland head coach Tony Heath said at halftime, but the Oilers came out playing with more intensity and took control of the game in the third quarter.

The Oilers scored three straight times as Jonathan White scored on a 33-yard reverse that caught Alvin's defense off guard.

Ronald Adams scored on a 9-yard run with 3:17 left in the third. Jake Orlando caught a pass from Blumrick for the two-point conversion to make up for the missed PAT earlier to make the score 20-3.

Pearland scored again when White caught a pass from Blumrick and turned into a 40-yard touchdown. The PAT by Bernstein was good and the Oilers were up 27-3.

Alvin scored on a 24-yard pass from Garrett Grey to close the gap to 27-10 with 10 seconds left in the third.

The Oilers sealed the victory with 2:13 left in the game when Chase Terrell blocked a punt and scored to make the final 34-10.

Blumrick led the offense hitting 16-of-26 for 276 yards and one TD and one INT.

Adams had 11 carries for 64 yards and one TD. Blumrick had 11 totes for 34 yards. White had one carry for one score.

Cody Williams had six catches for 136 yards while Brady Basso had two grabs for 42 yards. White had four grabs for 58 yards and one score. Hunter Smith had two catches for 26 yards and Isiah Chaney had three grabs for 35 yards.

Pearland travels to Pasadena Veterans Stadium on Thursday, October 15 at 7:00 p.m. to face the Sam Rayburn Texans.
