Clear Springs ends season for Pearland 54-29

PEARLAND — The Clear Springs Chargers lost their first two games and then got on a roll that allowed them to claim the District 24-6A championship and to finally get past their nemesis the Pearland Oilers 54-29.

The Oilers opened up the new Challenger Stadium last year with a victory over the Chargers and they returned in the first round of the playoffs to knock off the Chargers again in the bi-district round leaving them with a 9-2 season record.

But this year the Chargers were a much different team and they were going to make sure three-times a charm ended up in their favor.

The Chargers took care of both sides of the ball and that was the difference in the game.

Clear Springs had 502 total yards of offense over the Oilers while Pearland was able to get only 303 total yards including only 117 on the ground.

It didn't take long for Clear Springs to get on the scoreboard as Seth Porter nailed a 42-yard field goal with 9:28 left in the opening period for a 3-0 lead. The field goal was set up by a Clear Springs interception.

The Chargers finally got across the pay station late in the first when Isaiah Bibb crashed in for an 8-yard run and a 10-0 lead with 1:03 left in the opening period.

A quick turnover gave the ball back to the Chargers and they took advantage as quarterback Garrett Rooker hooked up with Peyton Sawyer on a 34-yard scoring strike for a 17-0 with :44 seconds left in the first quarter.

The score stayed stagnant until 4:31 left in the second quarter when Porter nailed a 22-yard field goal to increase the lead to 20-0.

Pearland finally got on the board just before intermission when Jaelin Benefield caught a 6-yard pass from back-up quarterback Layne Roblyer to cut the lead to 20-7 with 1:11 left before intermission.

But the quick striking Chargers were able to get another field goal from Porter with only :02 seconds left in the half on a 22-yard boot making the halftime score 23-7.

Clear Springs put the game away in the second half as they outscored the Oilers 21-7 in the third quarter.

Rooker scored on a 1-yard keeper and Bibb scored on a 2-yard run to increase the lead to 37-7 before Pearland got a 1-yard keeper from QB Austin Landry to cut the lead to 37-14 with 3:25 left in the third.

The Chargers reeled off two more game-clinching touchdowns as Bibb burned the Pearland defense on a 42-yard scoring jaunt and they Caleb Hines found an opening for a 67-yard burner with 11:48 left in the fourth period for a 51-14 margin.

Pearland continued to battle to get a 7-yard scoring run from Landry to cut the lead to 51-21, but Porter added his fourth field goal from 35-yards out for a 54-21 lead.

The Oilers scored on a 64-yard pass from Landry to Cinsai Pinkston with 2:04 left in the game to cut the final score to 54-29 after Landry scored on a two-point conversion.

Rooker completed 11-of-16 passes for 179 yards and one score while Sawyer had seven catches for 138 yards and a touchdown. Bibb rushed 23 times for 215 yards and three touchdowns.

Landry led Pearland rushers with 20 carries for 91 yards.

Pearland ends their season at 5-4 while Clear Springs (8-2) next takes on Galena Park North Shore in an area round matchup at 1 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 25 in Pasadena.
