Pearland rallies to get past Clear Springs 52-45

PEARLAND — The Pearland Oilers and head coach Steve Buckelew are experiencing the greatest start in school history. The Oilers disposed of a strong Clear Springs team 52-45 to post a perfect 15-0 start of the 2019-2020 basketball season.

Buckelew has been at the helm of the Pearland basketball program since 1995 and has recorded over 700 career wins and over 500 wins at Pearland High School. He is the winningest coach in PHS history and continues to build his legacy.

“We’re flying high right now,” Buckelew said. “I’ve never had a team start 15-0 here. We went 12-0 in 1998 and 1999. Our defense has been phenomenal every game this season. This group -- when they play -- can get the job done."

Against Clear Springs, Pearland took the opening quarter 10-9 thanks to a pair of 3-pointers by Jordan Maxwell and two baskets by D'antre Boudreaux.

But the Chargers unleashed a 3-point barrage in the second period to outscore the Oilers 17-11 giving them the halftime lead 26-21.

Leading the offensive attack was Seth Staats who fired in three long-range bombs and Allen Singleton who launched two 3-pointers and a basket as the pair combined for all of the Chargers points in the quarter.

Pearland came out a different team in the second half as the focus was on defense, a staple that Buckelew has emphasized since he first came to Pearland.

There was a sense of urgency by the Oilers and it showed as they outscored the visiting team 11-7 in the third period to cut the lead to 33-32 entering the final period.

The suffocating Pearland defense set the stage for the final eight minutes of the game as the Oilers outscored the Chargers 20-12 down the stretch to pull out the 52-45 win.

Boudreaux was one of the key players who stepped up in the final quarter with three baskets and a pair of free throws for eight points.

The Oilers also took advantage of the free throw line hitting 11-of-14 to key the comeback win.

Leading the way was Boudreaux who scored a team-high 14 points while Robel Desta and Maxwell both tossed in 11 points.

"Now we go to Katy on Friday to play Paetow, and they’ve been beating good people," Buckelew said. "They’ve got good players. We’ll try to get a win there, and then enjoy the holidays."
