Lady Oilers open up district with win over Brazoswood

PEARLAND — When the 2017-18 Pearland girls basketball season began, head coach Lauren Martens expected her girls to take off on the winning path, however, injuries to three of her starters derailed the defending District 23-6A champions and the season began with an uphill climb.

But Martens was confident that her girls would overcome the injury bug before the start of district action.

"We are definitely missing some kids, but the kids I have work their tails off," Martens said. "But it is giving some of our other players some experience that they normally wouldn't get which is going to make us a much stronger team when district begins."

Pearland opened district against the Brazoswood Lady Buccaneers and the Lady Oilers are now healthy to begin league play which showed as the Lady Bucs were not a match for Pearland who is looking to defend their 23-6A crown.

The Lady O's won the league title last year for the first time in 26 years. They should be considered the favorites this season.

Pearland wasted little time in establishing control of the game as they built a 17-4 lead after the first eight minutes of action thanks to Macey Braswell who scored a 3-pointer and a pair of short jumpers for seven points while three other players chipped in 10 points.

The second quarter belonged to Pearland as they outscored the visitors 21-10 for a 38-14 halftime lead thanks to two 3-pointers by Braswell and five points by sophomore De Yona Gaston who is back in the lineup after being out with an injury.

Brazoswood could only manage a field goal and a pair of free throws as the Lady Oilers used a pressing defense to keep the Lady Bucs offense to a minimum.

The defensive pressure increased in the second half as Pearland held Brazoswood scoreless in the third period while pumping 16 more points for a commanding 54-14 lead.

Pearland outscored the Lady Bucs 13-10 in the final quarter to post the 67-30 final score to begin district competition at 1-0.

Braswell led all scorers with 23 points while nine other Pearland got into the scoring column in the runaway victory.
