Dawson 43 - Pearland 39

The Dawson Lady Eagles (4-0) met the Pearland Lady Oilers (2-2) in the first round of district action and it was the Dawson girls who pulled out a 43-39 victory to remain undefeated in league play.

The Lady Eagles jumped out to an 11-7 first quarter lead and continued to hold on to the lead after a tough second quarter battle 12-11. Dawson took a 23-18 lead into the dressing room at intermission.

It appeared that Dawson would put the Lady Oilers out early in the second half as the Lady Eagles outscored Pearland 14-9 for a 37-27 advantage.

But Dawson had to hold on with a late run by the Lady Oilers 12-6 in the final eight minutes to hang on for the four-point margin of victory.

Jada Rogers scored two straight baskets to give Dawson a comfortable 37-22 cushion in the third quarter, but Pearland then went on an incredible 13-0 run to close the gap to 37-35 with 3:36 left in the game.

Dawson ended its dry spell when Rogers made one of two free throws for a 38-35 score at the 3:29 mark. With 2:11 left, Pearland’s Jocelyn Thompson also made one of two attempts to pull PHS within 38-36.

The Lady Eagles, though, got some breathing room when post Katherine Darden made two of four free throws in separate trips to the line. The last time came with 30 seconds left and boosted the Eagle advantage to 40-36.

Two more free throws gave Dawson a 42-36 cushion with 17 seconds left. The Lady Oilers refused to give up as Cierra Lane buried a long 3-pointer with 10 seconds left for a 42-39 score.

Dawson's Maddie Powers was then fouled with six seconds left and she made the first of two free throws for a 43-39 Dawson edge.

Katherine Darden was the game's leading scorer for Dawson with 12 points while Rogers tossed in 11.

Lane and Marissa Hart paced the scoring for Pearland with eight points apiece.
