Lady Oilers rout Brazoswood 79-29 in district opener


PEARLAND — Pearland head coach Lauren Martens saw her girls come out firing against Brazoswood in the District 23-6A opener for both teams and it would be the Lady Oilers who would easily win 79-29.

Pearland opened up the first frame with 24 points while Brazoswood could muster only four points on four free throws.

Senior Kyah Barlow had the hot scoring hand in the opening quarter hitting a pair of 3-pointers, two field goals and a free throw for 11 points while junior Jasmin Allen hit a trey and a basket for five points. Aryelle Sevens also got in on the scoring parade with three two-pointers for six points.

Pearland continued the scoring with 19 points in the second period while the Lady Bucs managed to score nine points giving the Lady Oilers a comfortable 41-13 lead at intermission.

DeYona Gaston scored eight points in the second frame while Sydni Pinales hit a pair of buckets and 4-of-5 free throws for eight points.

Pearland outscored the visitors in the third quarter 12-9 and then went on a scoring barrage to close out the game 26-9 making the final score 79-29.

Pinales led the Lady Oilers with a game-high 19 points as she finished with seven baskets and 5-of-10 from the free throw line.

Gaston and Stevens both finished with 12 points apiece while Barlow tossed in 11.

Pearland is 8-9 overall and 1-0 in district. The Lady Oilers will host Alief Taylor on Friday, January 3 at 1:00 p.m.
