Lady Oilers cruise past Lady Eagles 71-49

PEARLAND — The Pearland Lady Oilers are seeking to repeat as District 23-6A champions while the Dawson Lady Eagles are just hoping to compete well enough to make the post-season.

Pearland head coach Lauren Martens now has a healthy team who is gathering momentum in the first round of district at 5-0 while Dawson head coach Isabel Gomez is working with a young squad that gives a strong effort each time on the court with a 1-3 league mark.

The cross-town cousins were hoping for a close contest, but the more talented and experienced Lady O's were too much for Dawson in this district showdown.

Sophomore DeYona Gaston made her presence known early as she scored eight points including three baskets and 2-for-2 at the free throw line as the Lady Oilers took a 14-10 first quarter lead.

Junior Macey Braswell stepped up her game as she scored eight points in the second period while getting help from Leslie Nichols who tossed in six points to lead Pearland to a 22-13 margin over the Lady Eagles and a 36-23 halftime lead.

Dawson had a balanced scoring attack as six players scored in the second quarter led by Olivia Johnson who scored four points.

The third quarter belonged to Braswell as she pumped in 13 points to lead Pearland past Dawson 20-13 and a 56-36 lead entering the final period.

Pearland took the final frame 15-13 for a 71-49 district win to remain undefeated while Dawson fell to 1-4.

Braswell fired in a game-high 30 points including three treys while Gaston added 23.

Pearland was 10-of-14 from the free throw line.

Kyra Lunford led the Lady Eagles in scoring with nine points while Angelica White tossed in eight points. Dawson had 10 players who got in the scoring column.

The Lady Eagles continue to struggle from the free throw line as they were only 10-of-24.

Pearland 61 - George Ranch 43

After beginning the season 1-9 and three starters sidelined, the Lady Oilers are now 18-11 after winning the last 17-of-19 games and closing out the first round of District 23-6A action with a perfect 6-0 mark and a healthy squad that is on a quest to win their second straight league crown.

Pearland captured their 12th straight game with a 61-43 win over the George Ranch Lady Longhorns.

The Lady Oilers jumped out to an 18-14 first quarter lead and then the duo of Macy Braswell and DeYona Gaston got hot to lead Pearland to a 25-5 second quarter spurt and a 43-19 lead at intermission.

Pearland cruised in the second half to grab the 61-43 district win.

Braswell led the way with 23 points while Gaston added 22.

Alief Elsik 59 - Dawson 43

The Dawson Lady Eagles continue to struggle in their quest to make the playoffs this season as they fell to Alief Elsik 59-43 leaving them at 1-5 in the playoff race.

The teams were tied 10-10 at the end of the first eight minutes of action, but the Lady Rams took the second period 17-9 for a 27-19 lead at intermission.

Elsik continued to dominate the second half 32-24 making the final score 59-43.

Dawson is now 10-16 overall and will have to turn things around in the second round of league play if they are going to be able to extend their season.
