January 28, 2020
PEARLAND — The Pearland Oilers are having their best season ever under the leadership of head coach Steve Buckelew as they picked up two more wins last week against Brazoswood (61-44) and George Ranch (49-46). The Oilers are now 26-1 overall and 7-0 in district.
Brazoswood entered The Pressure Pit with only one district win and while they played the Oilers fairly close for the first three quarters, the Oilers, led by game-high scorer Derrick Ardoin's 15 points, defeated the Buccaneers 61-44.
Robel Desta scored six points to lead the first quarter offensive charge as the Oilers built a 15-9 lead. Jordan Maxwell and Ardoin both nailed 3-pointers in the frame as well.
Pearland continued to build on their lead 16-12 as five Oilers got in the scoring column with Ardoin hitting a basket and going 4-of-5 at the free throw line for seven points.
Brazoswood gave Pearland their stiffest test in the third quarter as both teams settled for a 14-14 tie still leaving the Oilers with a ten point lead 45-35 entering the final stanza.
But the Oilers were just too much for the Bucs down the stretch as the Pearland defense shut down Brazoswood on offense allowing only nine points while the Oilers put the game away with 16 points for a 61-44 district win.
Desta finished with 11 points while D'antre Boudreaux and Ty Williams added nine each while Maxwell tossed in eight.
Pearland 49 - George Ranch 46
Pearland got a real scare against George Ranch before they pulled out a 49-46 win in the fourth quarter.
The Oilers built a 15-8 first quarter lead and then saw the Longhorns battle back in the second period 16-10 leaving Pearland with a 25-24 halftime lead.
The Horns continued to control the game on offense by taking the third quarter 19-12 for a 43-37 lead entering the final eight minutes of action.
That's when the Pearland suffocating defense took over to limit the Horns to only three points for the rest of the game while re-taking the lead with 12 points and the 49-46 district win.
Pearland improves to 7-0 in league play while George Ranch drops to 5-2.
