Lady Oilers repeat as District 23-6A champions

PEARLAND — The Pearland girls won the District 23-6A title last season to snap a 26-year drought, but head coach Lauren Martens saw her girls defend their title this year to make it two in a row with a 61-48 win over Dawson.

Pearland has only one more league game left against George Ranch and they will be heading to the post-season.

Dawson needs a win over Alief Elsik to keep their hopes alive for the fourth and final spot in the playoffs.

The dynamic duo of junior Macey Braswell and sophomore DeYona Gaston were too much for the Lady Eagles to handle.

Braswell set the tone of the game in the first quarter as she unleashed three 3-pointers and a basket for 11 points in the first eight minutes to lead the Lady Oilers to an 18-10 lead.

Gaston took over the second quarter scoring seven points to outscore Dawson 13-7 giving Pearland a 31-17 halftime lead.

It was more of the same in the second half as Gaston led the way in the third period with nine points as Pearland took the quarter 16-11 for a 47-27 advantage entering the final frame.

The Lady Eagles continued to hustle and give it their all as they outscored Pearland 20-14 in the final quarter, but it wasn't enough as the Lady Oilers prevailed 61-48 to secure the district crown.

Gaston finished as the game-high scorer with 25 points while Braswell tossed in 19.

Angelica White led Dawson with 14 points.
