Denham tosses no hitter against Dobie

PEARLAND — The start of the second round of District 22-6A began with three teams tied for the top spot. Pearland, Alvin, and Dobie had one loss each for a 7-1 mark. Dobie beat Pearland in the first round, but lost to Alvin. Pearland beat Alvin leaving the three teams with a single loss.

This past week, Pearland avenged their loss to Dobie as junior pitcher Alyssa Denham tossed a no-hitter while her teammates scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth and played superb defense to hand her the pitching jewel. Denham struck out nine batters and walked only one while recording her momentous feat.

Kaylee Hoppens opened up the sixth frame with a walk. Sydney Gutierrez singled to left sending pinch-runner Janna Roberts to second.

Madeline Myers sacrificed Roberts and Gutierrez to second and third. That set up a wild pitch by the Dobie pitcher Michelle Kristoff allowing Roberts to score while Gutierrez moved to third with one out.

Natalie Romeo hit a grounder to second which allowed Gutierrez to score the second run for a 2-0 lead.

That would be all Denham would need to put Dobie away in the seventh with a ground out and two strikeouts to leave Pearland tied at the top with Alvin, who pounded Dawson 8-1. Both teams are now 8-1 in the district race.

Kristoff gave up five hits, two earned runs, struck out three, and walked none. The Lady Longhorns committed one error.

The game was stopped by the 15-run rule after three innings. Pearland scored seven runs in the first inning and nine in the second frame.
