PEARLAND —
Errors cost Pearland against Trojans; Oilers rebound against Deer
It was a frustrating game for Pearland head coach Ben Pardo as he watched his diamondmen commit four errors in the first three innings to spot South Houston a 6-0 lead in a District 22-5A contest. The Trojans went on to hand the Oilers their first league loss 7-4 as Pearland couldn't rally in the final innings. Pearland finished with seven miscues.
Pearland closed the gap in the bottom of the third with two runs to make the score 6-2 when Keith Freund reached base on a one-out error. After Kyle Cross flew out to left field, Matt Rhodes was hit-by-a-pitch putting runners on first and second. Michael Matthews ripped a double to plate Freund and Rhodes.
South Houston added another run in the top of the fourth for a 7-2 advantage.
Pearland would blank the Trojans the rest of the way while looking to rally and pull out the game.
The Oilers picked up two more runs in the bottom of the six then Brock Hartson hit a one-out single. Jake Paddock reached base on an error placing runners at first and second. Ben Foster delivered a single to score Hartson and move Paddock to third while being tossed out at second base for the second out. Freund delivered a triple to score Paddock before Kyle Cross lined out to right field leaving the score at 7-4.
Pearland (17-6, 5-1) couldn't score in the bottom of the seventh giving the Trojans the win and handing the district-leading Oilers their first league loss of the season.
