Pearland gets wins over Episcopal and Elsik

PEARLAND — Getting back on the winning track was important to the Pearland diamondmen and they did so in an 8-3 non-district win over Bellaire Episcopal and a 19-1 win over District 23-6A foe Alief Elsik.

It took a little while to get started, but the Oilers finally got things going after falling behind 2-0 after two innings.

In the top of the third, the Oilers scored three runs to take a 3-2 lead thanks to a two-out single by Mason Lytle.

The fourth inning proved to be the game clincher as the Oilers scored three more runs in the fourth giving them a 5-2 advantage.

Parker Deleon doubled to plate one run, an error scored another run, and Matt Adams singled to send another run across the plate.

Episcopal would cut the lead to 5-3 in the fourth, but the Oilers would add another run in the fifth and two more in the seventh to lock up the victory 8-3.

Lytle started on the hill for Pearland, surrendering two runs, four hits, striking out two and issuing no free passes. Garrett Grothe tossed two innings, allowed no runs, two hits, and struck out two with no walks. Colby Casey stepped up in relief and recorded the final six outs to earn the save.

Deleon, Jacob Whitehead, Joseph Barfield, Casey, Adams, John Thomas, Lytle, and Chase Keasler all got one hit.

Pearland 19 - Elsik 1

The game against Alief Elsik remained respectful in the first five innings as Pearland built a 7-1 lead.

The Oilers four runs in the second, two runs in the third and one in the fifth while Elsik pushed across one run in the bottom of the third.

But the floodgates opened in the sixth inning as Pearland scored 12 runs to make the score 19-1 and completely out of reach for the Rams.

Jacob Whitehead led the offensive attack with three hits and four RBIs while Brandon Connor also had four RBIs. Parker Deleon added two more hits for the Oilers who finished with 14 total hits and took advantage of 10 Elsik miscues.

Matt Adams pitched four innings and fanned eight batters.
