Lady Oilers sweep FB Travis in bi-district playoffs

6A REGION III BI-DISTRICT CHAMPIONS

Lady Oilers swept the FB Travis Lady Tigers 6-0, 13-2 to advance to the Class 6A Region III area round vs the Atascocita Lady Eagles.

The District 22-6A champions are now 30-4 and ranked No. 7 in the state.

The No. 7 state-ranked Pearland Lady Oilers easily disposed No. 25 state-ranked Fort Bend Travis in their best-of-three series sweep 6-0 and 13-2 to advance to the Class 6A Region III area round.

The Lady O's improved to 30-4 on the season after going 16-0 to win their second consecutive District 22-6A title during the regular season.

Pearland will face the Atascocita Lady Eagles in the Class 6A Region III area round. The Lady Oilers lost to Atascocita last year 2-1 in a best-of-three series. Atascocita went on to lose to Clear Springs in the 6A Region III Div I finals.

Pearland pitcher Madelyn Guzman didn't allow a single hit as the Lady Oilers shutout Fort Bend Travis Lady Tigers 6-0 in the first game of the best-of-three series in the Class 6A Region III Div I bi-district playoffs.

Payton Shugart was Pearland's offensive leader as she went 4-for-4 at the plate with a solo home run to left field in the fifth inning, doubled in the first inning, singled in the third inning, and singled in the sixth inning. Shugart scored one run and had one RBI.

The Lady Oilers finished with six runs on 15 hits.

Pearland added to their lead with two runs in the top of the fifth inning thanks to back-to-back home runs by Layla Bennett and Shugart.

Olivia Matejka capped off the scoring in the seventh inning with a solo home run to center field to make the score 6-0.

Travis never threatened as Guzman struck out 14 while walking only two in the no-hit performance. Leading hitters for Pearland included Shugart (4-for-4, 1 run, 1 RBI, HR), Bennett (2-for-5, 1 run, 1 RBI, HR), Matejka (2-for-3, 1 run, 1 RBI, HR), and Anison Lopez (2-for-5, 1 RBI).

Fort Bend Travis scored two runs in the top of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead but Pearland answered with two in the bottom of the frame and then went on a 11-0 run to crush the Lady Tigers 13-2 in six innings.

The Lady Oilers swept the best-of-three series to advance to the 6A Region III area round.

Payton Powell collected three hits in four at bats to lead the Lady Oilers on offense as she hit a home run to left field in the second inning, doubled in the first inning, and singled in the fourth inning giving her three runs scored and three RBIs.

The Lady Oilers added a run in the third, two in the fourth, one in the fifth, and two in the sixth to end the game.

Powell had company in the home run club as Elaina Njus, Payton Shugart, and Gisselle Moreles all had round trippers.

Leading hitters for the Lady Oilers were Anison Lopez (2-for-4, 1 run), Bennett (1-for-2, 1 run, 2 RBIs), Shugart (2-for-3, 2 runs, 2 RBIs, HR), Powell (3-for-4, 3 runs, 3 RBIs, HR), Njus (3-for-4, 1 run, 3 RBIs, HR), Dre Smith (2-for-3, 2 runs), and Morales (2-for-3, 1 run, 2 RBIs).
