Lady Oilers roll past Channelview 12-0

PEARLAND — It is hard to stay fired up after opening up the first inning with five runs, but the Lady Oilers stayed motivated enough to dispose of their first round playoff opponent Channelview 12-0 to advance to the 6A Region III area round.

The opening frame was highlighted with an RBI double by Kaylee Hoppens and an RBI single by Lindsey Stewart.

The Lady O's coasted through the next two innings without scoring until they erupted for seven runs in the fourth to get the 12-0 victory.

Junior pitcher Alyssa Denham was in total command as Channelview managed just one hit, no earned runs, one walk, and struck out six during her four innings of work. Adrianna Chavarria pitched the seventh, striking out the side.

The game ended after the top of the fifth with the 10-run mercy rule ending the season for the Lady Falcons (11-12).

“It’s nice to play a lot of people, especially when everyone we brought up to hit got a base hit when we needed it,” Pearland head coach Laneigh Clark said. “That should give those players confidence in the playoffs.”

Bit hits in the fourth came from Sydney Gutierrez, who had a two-run single; a single to left by Aileen Garcia, which drove in Pearland’s eighth run; and a two-run double to left-center by Alyssa Denham, which increased the Lady Oilers advantage to 10-0.

Stewart drove in Pearland’s 11th run with a groundout while Megan Hiers’ pinch-hit single up the middle made it 12-0.

“I thought defensively, we played well all night when they put the ball in play,” Clark said. “We lagged a little in our bats in the middle innings, but that’s how it happens sometimes.

“We got comfortable with the lead, but then we got the bats going a little later.”

Pearland will now take on Fort Bend Clements in the area round in a best-of-three series.

A double-header is scheduled on Friday, May 8 with the first game to begin at 6:00 p.m. at Butler Stadium (13755 Main St. - Houston, TX 77035). The second game will follow. A third game (if needed) will be on Saturday, May 9 at 7:00 p.m. at the same location.
