Pearland sweeps North Shore to advance

PEARLAND — Pearland faced a tough North Shore baseball team in the opening round of the Class 6A Region III playoffs but returned home with a sweep over the Mustangs in a best-of-three game series.

The Oilers took the first game 6-4 and the second contest 5-2 in a double-header played at North Shore.

In the first game, Pearland scored two runs in the top of the first, but North Shore answered with two runs to tie up the game 2-2.

The Mustangs scored a run in the top of the fifth, but Pearland exploded for four runs in their half of the fifth for a 6-3 advantage.

North Shore managed a run in the top of the sixth to cut the lead to 6-4, but that would be as close as they would get as the Oilers held on for the two-run victory.

The key to the four-run fifth was a three-run homer by Bailey Cummings that also scored Joseph Barfield and Macord Foran.

Jake Orlando hit a one-out double, Barfield was intentionally walked, Foran singled to score Orlando and then Cummings stepped up with his three-run blast over the left field wall to secure the win.

Mason Van Noort picked up the win for the Oilers on the mound as he allowed four runs on six hits, two walks and four strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings. Jaron Roblyer stepped in relief allowing no runs on one hit with four strikeouts to get the save.

Top hitters were Orlando who was 2-for-3 with one run scored. Cody Williams who was 1-for-3 with one run scored. Barfield who was 2-for-2 with one run scored and one RBI. Foran who was 2-for-3 with one run scored and two RBIs. Cummings who was 2-for-3 with one run scored and three RBIs.

Pearland 5 - North Shore 2

Pearland pitcher Izayah Quezada shut down the North Shore hitters as he surrendered only one hit, one unearned run, walked two, and struck out nine in six innings to lead the Oilers to a 5-2 sweep over the Mustangs to end their baseball season.

Pearland used a four-run fourth inning to build a 5-0 lead and easily hung on for the win.

Joseph Barfield had two hits and two RBIs to pace the Oilers while Craig Mattes also drove in a run.

Cummings and Barfield both had doubles while Parker DeLeon had a triple.
