Pearland diamondmen sweep FB Travis


PEARLAND — The Pearland Oilers swept the Fort Bend Travis Tigers 3-2 and 5-2 to advance to the 6A Region III quarterfinals.

In game one, Pearland pitcher Brady Basso gave up two runs and then settled down as the Oilers scored the game-winning run in the seventh inning to get a 3-2 decision over Travis.

Pearland scored single runs in the first, fifth and seventh innings in taking the win over the District 23-6A champs.

Caleb Maly had two of Pearland’s six hits while Raymon Garza drove in a run for the Oilers.

Basso was in command from the second inning on, pitching a complete game and striking out 10.

In game two, Nick Landrum pitched no-hit ball for the final 5 2/3 innings and the Oilers used a three-run second inning to take a 5-2 win over Travis to sweep a Class 6A area baseball series.

Jake Orlando drove in two runs for Pearland (26-5) while catcher Jacob Whitehead also had an RBI for the Oilers.

Caleb Maly continued his strong hitting as he had two of Pearland’s six hits while Travis just managed one hit.

Izayah Quezada took the mound for the Oilers to start the game, but exited after 1.2 innings when Travis scored two runs in the top of the second for a early 2-0 lead.

Landrum then entered the game and dominated allowing only one hit, striking out eight, and walking two.

Pearland will next take on Clear Creek with all games at Sweeny High School.

Game 1 is Thursday, May 19 at 7:00 p.m. Game 2 is Friday, May 20 at 6:00 p.m. Game 3 (if necessary) is on Saturday, May 21 at 11:00 a.m.

It is possible that Sweeny may be playing on their field in the playoffs. If so, game times for Pearland vs Clear Creek will be Thursday at 4:00 p.m., Friday at 4:00 p.m. and Saturday at 2:00 p.m.

The win was the seventh straight for Pearland which is now 4-0 in the playoffs.
