Pearland sweeps Clear Creek to advance
May 23, 2016
PEARLAND — The Pearland Oilers advance to the Class 6 Region III semifinals after sweep the three-time District 24-6A champs Clear Creek 12-5 and 6-5. The Wildcats finish 26-8-1.
The Oilers improve to 28-5 on the season and will face Langham Creek in the next round.
In the first game of a scheduled double-header, Pearland used a consistent offense led by Caleb Maly, to score six runs in the first two innings for a 6-0 lead.
That set the pace for the lopsided win as the Oilers added two runs in the fourth, three in the fifth, and one more in the sixth for 12 runs.
Clear Creek exploded to score five runs in the bottom of the fifth to close the gap to 11-5, but the Oilers shut the Wildcats down the rest of the way.
Maly was 4-for-4 at the plate, scored two runs, and had a walk while Macord Foran was 1-for-3 and drove in three runs for the Oilers.
A single by Cody Williams and a sacrifice fly by Bailey Cummings in the first inning contributed to the first four runs. An RBI single by Jake Orlando and an RBI single by Foran in the second frame added two more runs for the early offensive display.
Mason Van Noort recorded the win from the mound even though he allowed five runs over 4 1/3 innings. Van Noort struck out three, walked two and gave up six hits.
Nick Landrum stepped in relief in the fifth inning and he allowed only one hit in 2 2/3 innings of work. He allowed no runs and walked none while striking out two.
Pearland 6 - Clear Creek 5
The second game was much closer and Pearland had to score a run in the bottom of the sixth to pull out the one-run victory.
Pearland jumped to a 3-0 lead after two innings before Creek tied it with two runs in the top of the third and one in the top of the fourth.
The Oilers broke the 3-3 tie on a squeeze bunt by Cody Williams and a bloop single to right by Joseph Barfield which was misplayed by Creek, resulting in a 5-3 Oiler lead in the bottom of the fourth.
Creek tied the game at 5-5 in the fifth with two runs.
Pearland answered with the game-winning run in the sixth on a one-out single to center by Williams and Foran’s two-out single to center which brought home the Williams.
In the two games, Pearland pounded out 29 hits while taking advantage of seven errors with the Wildcats.
The Oilers had at least two batters reach base in each of Pearland’s 13 innings and had a total of 43 base runners combined to the Wildcats’ 26 in the two games.
Maly was again a thorn in the side of Creek as he was 2-for-2 with three runs scored. Jake Orlando was 3-for-4 with one RBI. Barfield was 2-for-4 with one RBI. Williams was 1-for-3 with one run scored and one RBI.
Pearland reliever Jaron Roblyer pitched the final 2 2/3 innings in relief of Brady Basso, allowing no runs while striking out five to pick up the win.
“Jaron’s been in that position many times for us,” Pearland head coach Anthony Scalise said. “He usually doesn’t start games for us because that’s what he does best for us.
“His role has been late relief, and he’s done it well all year. He’s 6-foot-6, he throws downhill and he commands three pitches for a strike. He keeps people off balance. When you can do that, especially against Creek which can really, really swing it…that helps.”
Basso allowed four hits, five runs, struck out six while walking three.
The Oilers will face Langham Creek in a best-of-three series beginning on Thursday, May 26 at 7:30 p.m. Game 2 will be Friday, May 27 at 7:30 p.m. Game 3 (if needed) will be on Saturday, May 28 at 1:00 p.m. All games will be played at the University of Houston.
