Local teams perform well at John Turner Volleyball Tournament


PEARLAND — Last week, 58 teams invaded Pearland as the Adidas John Turner Classic Volleyball Tournament began on Thursday, August 12 through Saturday, August 14. This featured some of the top teams all across Texas.

The tournament was named after former Pearland High School volleyball coach John Turner who retired from coaching in 2016. Coach Turner has long been a name synonymous with girls volleyball, not only in the state of Texas, but across the nation. During his coaching career he amassed a career coaching record of 806-238.

There were five area teams who participated including Dawson, Friendswood, Manvel, Pearland, and Shadow Creek.

Dawson recorded an 8-1 record falling only to The Woodlands (25-22, 25-13) who was crowned this year's tournament champion with a perfect 9-0 mark. The Lady Eagles placed fifth in the tournament.

The Eagles beat Summer Creek (25--11, 25-16), Port Neches Groves (25-11, 25-11), Highland Park (25-19, 25-18), SA O'Conner (25-20, 25-11), St. John's (26-24, 25-12), Hays (25-18. 25-15), Pearland (25-22, 25-19), and Dripping Springs (26-28, 25-21, 25-17).

Pearland finished seventh in the tournament with a 5-3 mark. The Lady Oilers reeled off their first five games with a win, but then lost the last three games.

The Lady Oilers beat Trinity Christian Academy (25-21, 20-25, 25-22), New Braunfels (26-24, 31-29), St. Agnes (25-19, 24-26, 25-21), Bellaire (25-21, 25-12), and Friendswood (25-19, 25-18) while falling to Clear Brook (25-20, 18-25, 25-18), Deer Park (25-19, 25-21), and Dawson (25-22, 25-19).

Manvel placed 25th with a 5-4 record, Friendswood placed 26th with a 4-5 record, and Shadow Creek placed 31st with a 2-6 mark.
