Pearland Lady Oilers receive two national honors

PEARLAND — The Pearland High School softball team recently received two national honors for its contributions on and off the field.

The Lady Oilers were part of a nationwide group of National Fastpitch Coaches Association softball teams which raised $342,000 this year in support of the Association and the American Cancer Society’s StrikeOut Cancer initiative.

Pearland High School led all high schools in the nation this year by raising $4,000, which was more than the leading colleges in NAIA, NCAA Division II and junior college as well as the travel ball leader.

Pearland honored Darnet Dunnam as its Haynie Spirit Strikeout Cancer Tournament beneficiary this past spring as part of that fund-raising effort.

In addition, the Lady Oiler softball coaches were honored as the NFCA Regional Coaching Staff of the Year.

Pearland’s softball staff for the 2015-2016 season included head coach Laneigh Clark, co-head coach Michele Hyden and assistant coaches Lori Boyd, Tiffany Neal and Lauren Martens.

The Lady Oilers advanced to the 2016 Class 6A state championship game, falling to Keller in the final.
