Dawson-Pearland Bowl

PEARLAND — The time has arrived as the Dawson Eagles (4-1) and the Pearland Oilers (5-0) prepare to play one another on Friday, October 3 at The Rig at 7:00 p.m.

The stage is set as both teams enter the contest with 3-0 marks in District 22-6A. On paper, the game looks very even as both teams have been racking up big numbers on offense while limiting their opponents on the defensive side.

Last week, both teams dominated their district game.

Dawson blew out Pasadena Memorial 56-6 while Pearland dominated South Houston 49-7.

Both teams scored at will in both games so both should be primed for an offensive battle this week.

The defense may be the one to decide this first-ever confrontation between the schools. Take a look at each team.

Dawson Eagles

Head coach: Eric Wells - 2014 record: 4-1 overall - 3-0 in district
Players to watch: RB Brett Winnegan, OL Cameron Wilson, LB Travonte Moody, CB Jordan Wilson, RB Saevion Johnson, DB Mykul Mitchell, QB Zach Smith, TE Derry Ruth, OL Michael Sanchez, OL Tucker Wells, WR Antoine Cannady, K Tyler Day, OL Austin Bush, DB Brandon Guzman, LB John Alexander, DL Richard Picking, DB James Rhodes.

Keys to the Game: The Eagles were in the regional finals in their final year of Class 4A. RB Winnegan (2,290 rushing yards, 26 touchdowns) was leading ball carrier in the state returning for this season. However, opposing defenses have keyed on the speedster determined not to let him beat them. That has been successful so far this season as Winnegan only has 223 yards on 43 carries for two touchdowns after five games.

The big surprise has come from starting senior quarterback Vance Galloway who is 56-of-89 passing for 1,025 yards and 11 TDs with only one INT. Plus, he is the leading rusher with 448 yards on 52 carries and five TDs. He will be one of the key players for Pearland to stop. RB Saevion Johnson has also proven to be a big threat after gaining 394 yards on 38 totes for five scores. Brailon Mouton is one of Galloway's favorite targets as he has over a dozen catches for more than 200 yards. Isaiah Guillory, Drake Rainer, and Derry Ruth are also dangerous receivers.

Other key players: TE Derry Ruth and OL Cameron Wilson, OL Tucker Wells, and OL Austin Bush are key players on the offensive front. On defense, the Eagles will need strong play from LB Travonte Moody, DB Brandon Guzman and DB Muykul Mitchell which are the cornerstones of the Dawson defense.

Pearland Oilers

Head coach: Tony Heath - 2014 record 5-0 overall - 3-0 in district
Players to watch: OL Willie Williams, RB JaColbie Butler, TE Ryan Deshotel, DE Deonte Givens, DT Ronnie Fraser, LB Zane Gonzales, DT Joey Longoria, QB Connor Blumrick, WR Ryan Diaz, WR Jonathan Sam, QB Jacob Blumrick, OL Adam Jewell, OL Josh Reynolds, RB Chase Foster, S Justice Reece, LB Terrence Jones, DT Braxton Penrice, CB Cory Grayson.
Keys to the Game: The No. 5 state-ranked Oilers advanced all the way to the Class 5A Division I state championship game before succumbing to Allen to finish 14-2 in 2013. With the majority of the starters back, a playoff berth appears etched in stone as RB JaColbie Butler attempts to join a prolific list of Pearland High School running backs that revitalized the school’s football program. OLs Willie Williams, OL Josh Reynolds and OL Adam Jewell should create running lanes for Butler to thrive in while the Oilers control the clock.

So far this season, Butler has fulfilled is potential as he has 606 yards rushing on 66 carries (9.2 avg.) with 12 TDs. He also has caught six passes for 159 yards and two scores. Butler's stats would be even greater if he could play an entire game. That shouldn't be a problem this week.

Senior quarterback Jake Blumrick will be one of the key players as he has hit 52-of-77 passing for 929 yards and 11 touchdowns. He also has 73 yards rushing on only eight carries and three scores.

Cody Williams is the top receiver with 11 catches for 202 yards and one TD. Jonathan Sam is capable of scoring from anywhere on the field after catching ball. He has seven grabs for 136 yards and two TDs. TE Ryan Deshotal has also proven to be a scoring threat with five grabs for 128 yards and 2 scores. Ryan Diaz has snared six passes for 73 yards and one score. Jake Orlando and Daniel Petty also have sure hands.

Defensively, Pearland is fast and experienced and will give Dawson their biggest test to date. Leading defenders include: DE Deonte Givens, DT Ronnie Fraser, DT Braxton Penrice, CB Cory Grayson and S Justice Reece will bolster the Pearland defense.

Kordell Caldwell, Daniel Petty, Cory Grayson, and Brycen Drennon all have interceptions.
