Pearland falls to Manvel in league play

PEARLAND — The first round of District 22-6A has come to an end and the Oilers find themselves in a critical position in making the playoffs. Pearland is 15-10 on the season and 4-4 in district.

"We've got to win six of eight," Pearland head coach Steve Buckelew said in reference to facing the second round. "No, ifs, ands, or buts, unless something crazy happens. We've got to start our playoff campaign now."

The Oilers got wins over Pasadena (70-50), Alvin (61-35), Sam Rayburn (61-46), and Pasadena Memorial (68-55) while falling to Dobie, South Houston, Dawson, and Manvel.

On the other hand, Manvel (16-9) is in a position of winning the 22-6A title, but will need to beat second-place Dawson (20-5, 7-1) in their second round confrontation as well as the other league opponents.

Pearland couldn't get it going against Manvel at home as the Mavericks raced out to a quick start and the Oilers never recovered.

Despite owning an eight-game winning streak and three straight league wins, the Oilers proved no match for the faster and more aggressive Mavericks.

The game also pitted the two top freshman in the league in Manvel's Jalen Preston (21 points) and Pearland's Ajare Sanni (14 points).

Manvel jumped out to an 18-9 first quarter lead and stretched it to 12-7 in the second period for a 30-17 halftime lead.

The Oilers battled back in the third 12-7 to close the gap to 37-29 appearing to make a game of it thanks to an 11-0 run by Pearland.

Unfortunately for Pearland, the Oilers went dry for over six minutes in the final frame allowing Manvel to build a lead that was insurmountable to overcome thanks to an 8-0 run by the Mavs.

Manvel finished the final quarter 22-14 for the 57-42 victory.

Sean Dykes added 13 for Manvel on offense.

Michael Guillory (six rebounds), John Deterville, and Dovante Carter each scored seven points.

Pearland travels to Pasadena on Friday, Jan. 23 at 7:00 p.m.
