Lady Oilers edge Lady Eagles 52-40


PEARLAND — The Pearland Lady Oilers are a half a game in front of George Ranch for the district lead with a 9-1 mark in league action and 20-10 overall.

Pearland hosted the Dawson Lady Eagles (19-13, 6-3) and came away with a 52-40 district win. The Lady Eagles are currently in third place in the district standings and are in a strong position to advance to the post-season with the Lady Oilers.

As usual, the two teams have a strong rivalry and it showed in the opening quarter with Pearland edging Dawson 10-9.

Pearland got early scoring from DeYona Gaston (4 points) and Aryelle Stevens (4 points) while Dawson was led by Jalayah Ingram who tossed in six points and the Lady Eagles hit 3-of-6 free throws.

The Lady Oilers got hot from long-range in the second quarter as Jasmin Allen (6 points), Ashlynn Patrick (3 points), and Kyah Barlow (3 points) all hit 3-pointers to go with 3-of-6 shooting at the free throw line for a total of 15 points.

Dawson managed 3-pointers from Sarolyn Charles and Jordan Skaggs with Ingram adding a basket for eight points leaving the Eagles trailing 25-17 at intermission.

Pearland kept the pressure on Dawson in the second half outscoring the visitors 14-8 for a 39-25 lead and then withstood a scoring push by the Lady Eagles in the final quarter 15-13 for the 52-40 win.

Gaston was the game-high scorer with 23 points as she hit seven baskets and 8-of-10 free throws.

Charles led the scoring for Dawson with 10 points. The Lady Eagles were 10-of-17 from the charity stripe.
