Lady Deer nips Lady Oilers in soccer playoffs 1-0

PEARLAND — Pearland and Deer Park battled for the first half without either team able to get a score until time was winding down and a long shot at the Pearland goal resulted in the ball striking the crossbar and bouncing back in front the net.

Deer Park's Kayla Ortiz punched in the ball just past the Lady Oilers' goalie, but the goal was waved off as the first half had expired after the shot leaving the two teams tie 0-0 at intermission.

The Lady Oilers tried to use their good fortune to gain some momentum to begin the second half with some offense of their own.

Pearland fired shots at Deer Park's goal at the 36:19 and 35:45 marks, but they missed their target.

The Lady Oilers came back with a corner kick and shot on goal but they came up empty.

With 16:33 left in the game, freshman Camden Chance scored the only goal of the game for Deer Park.

Chance blocked a Pearland pass, dribbled down the field, and when Pearland's goalie left the front of the net, Chance drilled home the game winner.

Deer Park's defense stiffened and made sure that Pearland wasn't going to have any easy shots to tie up the game.

"We were going to make sure they weren't going to beat us over the top," said Deer Park head coach Jesse Saavedra. "They kind of like doing that. They've got three really good forwards, but we were just going to contain them and keep them in front of us. We did a really good job of that."
